SELECTING YOUR POMERANIAN |
|||
The excitement is high when selecting your new Pom. However, don't let it drive you into hasty decisions. It is very important to be aware of certain things. Here are some things to consider before you purchase your new baby to love. BEHAVIOR The behavior of a Pomeranian puppy gives you a general view how the nature of the dog will be when the dog matures. A Pomeranian puppy should appear active, lively and playful. The puppy should have an intelligent expression and bright eyes. APPEARANCE AND COAT The appearance of the Pomeranian should be sturdy and balanced. The head should be well-proportioned to the body. The tail, which is very characteristic to the breed, should turn over the back and set high. The coat should be plush (unless in the case of a older Pomeranian puppy - in the "puppy uglies") with no signs of parasites. Ideally, the coat is two-layered, the undercoat being short and soft and the topcoat being more coarse to give texture for the coat. MEDICAL HISTORY Ask the breeder of any medical problems the puppy or it's parents or grandparents may of had or have. MALE OR FEMALE?????????? The differences between male and female Poms are mostly characteristic and in appearance. The male will more likely represent his breed standard closer than a female, which is important if you plan to show your dog. Males will keep a more beautiful coat throughout the year than a female. A female will blow her coat everytime she comes into season and expecially when she whelps a litter. If you spay your female this will cut down GREATLY on her blowing her coat. She will then be more like a male that blows his coat once a year. If you are worried about a male wanting to mark his territory and hormone problems you should neuter your male early at my reccomended age of 4-6months. This will help prevent the desire to mark territory and other problems. Keep in mind ALL of the above are guidelines ment to help you in your decision. They are not meant to tell you exactly what kind of dog to buy, nor, to say that ALL circumstances and conditions are the same. But, mearly to help you in your quest in finding the "Joy of your life" that will hopefully be a long lasting friend to share your life with. Good luck in your decision. |
